Who doesn’t love a bit of Netflix? I only ever dabbled with it until a couple of months ago. I had a password to a friend’s account and watched it now and again on my laptop. But then I upgraded my phone contract and was offered a 6 month free subscription! So, I have it on my TV at home and watch it on my laptop at Uni and I’m absolutely hooked. What did I do before it??
I thought I’d collate a list of the best TV shows (in my opinion) currently on Netflix (in the UK). These are in no particular order because I don’t think I can actually decide which ones I like most!
1. House M.D.
House. Oh my god. I’d heard so much about this show (it originally ran 2004 – 2012) I can’t quite believe it took me so long to watch it. I’m currently near the end of the final season and I can’t remember a time I was so addicted to a TV show before. Starring Hugh Laurie, House M.D. is about an antisocial, maverick doctor who specialises is diagnostic medicine. He’s witty, he’s sarcastic, he’s cynical and he’s a genius. The show follows him and his desperate desire to solve puzzles along with his medical team and it’s nothing other than flawless. Hugh Laurie is so good that I genuinely forget he’s English and that Greg House isn’t actually a real person. If you haven’t seen it before, prepare to lose a lot of evenings binge watching because there are 177 episodes in total, all of which are 45 minutes long. Be prepared to be in this for the long haul and be prepared to love every minute of it.
I’ve only just finished the first season of Suits and already I adore it. There are currently only 2 seasons on Netflix, which means you’ll have to track down the other two seasons yourself, but don’t let that put you off because it’s such a great show. Mike Ross, a brilliant college drop-out is on the run from a drug deal gone bad. Mike finds himself working for Harvey Spector, one of New York City’s best lawyers and the show follows them both. It’s clever, the characters are superb and it is horrendously addictive. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d definitely recommend it.
3. Orphan Black
My friend Rosie introduced me to this TV show and it is the most clever, gripping, well acted TV show I’ve ever seen in my life. There is currently only one season on Netflix and 2 have aired. Season 3 is due to air next April (and hoooooly crap am I excited). Orphan black centres around Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany), a streetwise hustler who is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her. I can’t really tell you much else about this show without MASSIVE spoilers but I can say that Tatiana Maslany is an incredible actress. I mean Jesus Christ she’s so good it’s insane. Go watch it. Right now. I promise you won’t regret it.
4. Life Unexpected
Life Unexpected is an older one. (I say older, I mean 2010-2011). I used to watch it when I was in 6th form and it’s just an all round great show. It centres around 15 year old Lux who has spent her life in foster care. She applies to become an emancipated minor and on the journey, finds her biological father (who didn’t know she existed) and biological mother (who is a local radio ‘star’). The judge rules that they will have joint custody of Lux instead of emancipating her and the show follows their life together as they get to know one and other. It’s got nice parts, it’s got sad parts, it’s just an enjoyable show overall. It actually got cancelled after the second season due to low ratings and I was GUTTED because I loved it. Definitely an easy watch if you’re fancying it.
5. Lost Girl
I’m fairly new to Lost Girl, but I already love it. According to IMDB “Lost Girl focusses on the beautiful and charismatic Bo, a supernatural being who feeds on the energy of humans. Refusing to embrace her supernatural clan and their it’s hierarchy, Bo is a renegade who takes up the fight for the underdog while searching for the truth about her own mysterious origins.” It’s super duper cheesy but oh so enjoyable. It really hooks you and you find yourself absolutely adoring the characters, which I think is so important in a good TV show. I’d definitely watch it if it sounds like you’d like it!
So, they are my top 5 TV shows on Netflix. It was hard to narrow it down! There are so many others! Have you seen any of these shows? What did you think of them? Is there anything you’d recommend for me? I always love new TV recommendations!
