Netflix: Top 5 TV shows

netflix top 5 tv shows

Who doesn’t love a bit of Netflix? I only ever dabbled with it until a couple of months ago. I had a password to a friend’s account and watched it now and again on my laptop. But then I upgraded my phone contract and was offered a 6 month free subscription! So, I have it on my TV at home and watch it on my laptop at Uni and I’m absolutely hooked. What did I do before it??

I thought I’d collate a list of the best TV shows (in my opinion) currently on Netflix (in the UK). These are in no particular order because I don’t think I can actually decide which ones I like most!

1. House M.D.

house_md_ver6_xlg{Number of seasons in total: 8 | Number of seasons on Netflix: 8}

House. Oh my god. I’d heard so much about this show (it originally ran 2004 – 2012) I can’t quite believe it took me so long to watch it. I’m currently near the end of the final season and I can’t remember a time I was so addicted to a TV show before. Starring Hugh Laurie, House M.D. is about an antisocial, maverick doctor who specialises is diagnostic medicine. He’s witty, he’s sarcastic, he’s cynical and he’s a genius. The show follows him and his desperate desire to solve puzzles along with his medical team and it’s nothing other than flawless. Hugh Laurie is so good that I genuinely forget he’s English and that Greg House isn’t actually a real person. If you haven’t seen it before, prepare to lose a lot of evenings binge watching because there are 177 episodes in total, all of which are 45 minutes long. Be prepared to be in this for the long haul and be prepared to love every minute of it.

2. Suits

Suits-season-2-62901{Current number of seasons: 4 | Number of seasons on Netflix: 2}

I’ve only just finished the first season of Suits and already I adore it. There are currently only 2 seasons on Netflix, which means you’ll have to track down the other two seasons yourself, but don’t let that put you off because it’s such a great show. Mike Ross, a brilliant college drop-out is on the run from a drug deal gone bad. Mike finds himself working for Harvey Spector, one of New York City’s best lawyers and the show follows them both. It’s clever, the characters are superb and it is horrendously addictive. If you haven’t seen it yet, I’d definitely recommend it.

3. Orphan Black

orphan-black-season-2-poster8{Current number of seasons: 2 | Number of seasons on Netflix: 1}

My friend Rosie introduced me to this TV show and it is the most clever, gripping, well acted TV show I’ve ever seen in my life. There is currently only one season on Netflix and 2 have aired. Season 3 is due to air next April (and hoooooly crap am I excited). Orphan black centres around Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany), a streetwise hustler who is pulled into a compelling conspiracy after witnessing the suicide of a girl who looks just like her. I can’t really tell you much else about this show without MASSIVE spoilers but I can say that Tatiana Maslany is an incredible actress. I mean Jesus Christ she’s so good it’s insane. Go watch it. Right now. I promise you won’t regret it.

4. Life Unexpected

life-unexpected-poster{Number of seasons: 2 | Number of seasons on Netflix: 1}

Life Unexpected is an older one. (I say older, I mean 2010-2011). I used to watch it when I was in 6th form and it’s just an all round great show. It centres around 15 year old Lux who has spent her life in foster care. She applies to become an emancipated minor and on the journey, finds her biological father (who didn’t know she existed) and biological mother (who is a local radio ‘star’). The judge rules that they will have joint custody of Lux instead of emancipating her and the show follows their life together as they get to know one and other. It’s got nice parts, it’s got sad parts, it’s just an enjoyable show overall. It actually got cancelled after the second season due to low ratings and I was GUTTED because I loved it. Definitely an easy watch if you’re fancying it.

5. Lost Girl

lost_girl_xlg{Current number of seasons: 5 | Number of seasons on Netflix: 4}

I’m fairly new to Lost Girl, but I already love it. According to IMDB “Lost Girl focusses on the beautiful and charismatic Bo, a supernatural being who feeds on the energy of humans. Refusing to embrace her supernatural clan and their it’s hierarchy, Bo is a renegade who takes up the fight for the underdog while searching for the truth about her own mysterious origins.” It’s super duper cheesy but oh so enjoyable. It really hooks you and you find yourself absolutely adoring the characters, which I think is so important in a good TV show. I’d definitely watch it if it sounds like you’d like it!

So, they are my top 5 TV shows on Netflix. It was hard to narrow it down! There are so many others! Have you seen any of these shows? What did you think of them? Is there anything you’d recommend for me? I always love new TV recommendations!

    I’ve been really impressed lately with the shows produced by Netflix itself. I can especially recommend Sense8 and Jessica Jones. So good! And Netflix does a good job of having a diverse cast and strong female leads.

    I’m so glad I’ve found this right now! I’ve just signed up for Netflix (little bit late to the party…) and I’m so excited to binge my way through so many new series – these sound right up my street!

    We have such similar taste! I started watching House for the first time recently and had a big ol’ House-marathon most nights! I’m surprised I never watched it before having Netflix. I suppose that’s the benefit of it – you can watch so many series you missed on TV!

    Suits is on my ‘to watch’ list, I have a couple of other series I need to finish first! We’re watching American Horror Story at the moment

    Orphan Black was a random choice we made when we ran out of things to watch, but how good is it??! Can’t wait for it to come back in April.

    I might watch the others too because I think if you liked them, I would!

    • 18th January 2015 / 7:52 pm

      I. LOVE. HOUSE. Is it weird that I’m strangely attracted to Hugh Laurie in it??? Silver fox! Haha! Suits is great! I’m fully caught up now, which I’m actually gutted about because it means when it comes back in the next couple of months I’m resigned to watching it weekly!! Orphan Black is one of the best, most gripping TV shows I’ve ever seen!! I don’t know what I did before Netflix now!

  199. 11th January 2015 / 7:50 pm

    I actually haven’t seen any of these shows! I’m always on the lookout for new series to get in to so definitely appreciate the suggestions :-)

    I love Orphan Black so much, I’m crazily addicted to it. There are so many shows I need to watch, even though I watch a lot anyway!

    Good thing about doing a TV Production course…they encourage us to watch ALL the telly we can.

    • 11th January 2015 / 1:53 pm

      It’s so good isn’t it!!! I can’t wait for the new season, I’m SO excited! And oh wow, I’m so jealous! I wish my course did that haha! Xxx

  201. 10th January 2015 / 8:33 pm

    I’ve watched a few episodes of Orphan Black and love it, such a good idea for a show. I’ve also heard great things about Suits so thats on my to watch list. I love Ru Pauls Drag Race which is just so funny and addictive haha. Also loved Prison Break but only the first couple of series. I really don’t need new things to watch on netflix though, I already procrastinate enough as it is!

      Awh shucks, thanks Emma! If you only watch one, make it Orphan Black. So clever and gripping and there are currently only 2 seasons each with 10 episodes. Unlike House that has 8 seasons and 117 episodes!!! xxxx

  213. 6th January 2015 / 7:10 pm

    We’ve got that same free trial and I love love love it!
    My sister has recommended that I watch House so now I know I have to.

    I wasn’t really a fan of watching series until I watched Orange is the New Black on Netflix ages ago. It’s probably one of the best things on there. I definitely get a lot more use from the Netflix account now that I realise I do like series after all though! I watched Suits recently and LOVED it- I was so disappointed to find as I got to the end of the 2nd series that there were another two not on netflix! I’ve started Orphan Black too- it’s really gripping but I haven’t had time to get much past the fourth episode. I had no idea there’s another series of that too. People can’t believe I’ve never watched House but I just don’t think I have the time to dedicate to all those episodes!

      I’m about halfway through the first season of OITNB and enjoying it! I don’t seem to instantly LOVE it like other people though, maybe I just need to commit more! I’m gutted about Suits as well, I assumed there were just two seasons haha! Orphan Black is probably my favourite show EVER. It gets more gripping the more you watch it, and S2 is just as good! S3 is coming in April this year and I can’t wait! I’m glad I bit the bullet and started House because it’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. So clever! xxx

    • 6th January 2015 / 5:08 pm

      It’s not that expensive at all! And like I said, mine is free for 6 months with my phone contract. (Yippeeeee!) I’m glad I got the free trial though, because it’s made me realise how much I love it and how much I’d get my money’s worth! Definitely going to be actually paying for it when my 6 months runs out! xxx
