Do you believe in…?

Do you believe in | rhianna olivia

Okay so you may already know this, but I’m absolutely obsessed with anything paranormal/supernatural/generally anything that would fall into an “unknown/unsolved” category. I want to talk more about it on here, but I’m still not fully decided on how.

I recently talked about my first experience with a Tarot reading, and I briefly explained a little in the post how I’m interested in that sort of thing, but there wasn’t any detail.

About a week ago, I thought I’d have some fun and do a Twitter thread of polls asking whether people believe in something or not. It had such a great reception and it was really fun. That, and I found the answers really interesting!

In a conversation with Sam and Kirsty a few days after, they mentioned I should do some sort of blog post about it all, and I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before. I am trying to do this whole ~stop caring and blog what I want~ thing, anyway.

I figured I’d show you all the results of the polls, in case you hadn’t seen them, and give you a little insight into what I personally believe about each topic. That way, it’s kind of an insight into me and also allows me to introduce some possible future content topics all in one.

Winner.

Plz discuss in the comments – I’d love to talk to you all about what you believe in/don’t believe in!

(It’s worth noting, I’m not going to talk about every single poll in the Twitter thread, only because there were LOTS of them, and this post would quickly become 10,000 words long. But I’m going to touch upon some of my favourites, and I might delve into the others at a later date!)

Do you believe in ghosts/spirits?

Only 19% of people said a definitive “no” to this question and I was quite surprised. Although, this will be a running theme of this post I think.

So, do I believe in ghosts/spirits? Absolutely yes.

I’m not sure if there’s any specific reason some places are haunted, or some spirits are easier to pick up/contact than others, but I 110% do believe in them.

It’s an interesting one for me, because I’ve never had any sort of spiritual/paranormal encounter of my own, but I know tonnes of people who have. I’m not sure I believe any of these “look, a GHOST is in this photo and it wasn’t there when I took it ~how sp00ky~” things, as I think the majority of the time, a spiritual encounter is a fairly personal thing.

I also don’t believe ghosts/spirits are (on the whole) malicious at all. But obviously, there are exceptions.

I really, REALLY want to book in with a medium because I think it could be really interesting.

Do you believe in aliens/intelligent life?

I’m very happy to report a massive 62% of people said yes and only 19% said no. YOU GO, THE 62%.

Honestly? I don’t want to offend/upset anyone, but I genuinely think it’s a little ignorant to think Earth is the only planet in the entire universe that has intelligent life.

We don’t even *really* know how big the universe is. Just think about that.

That said, I don’t think aliens are just the little green men we see in films that come and abduct people under the cover of darkness for tests. Intelligent life could mean anything, they could look like anything, they could do anything, they might not even know we exist.

If you are on the fence about aliens/intelligent life, just have a think and a research. You’d be really shocked at some of the things that have happened with “no explanation”, or things that are “just military tests”, or things that just aren’t talked about in the media at all.

Do you believe in the devil/demons and do you believe in God/any sort of deity/higher power?

I thought I’d do these two in one, because they *kind of* go together in a way.

If you read my Tarot post (linked earlier in this post) you’ll know I had a fairly Catholic upbringing. I went to church weekly, had my first Communion, then was given the choice by my parents (my Mum is Catholic and my Dad is Athiest) whether I wanted to continue. (Spoiler: I didn’t.)

Just because I stopped being outwardly religious, doesn’t mean I stopped believing in God. I wouldn’t say I do believe in God, but I’m definitely open to something existing. I’m very much Agnostic in that I am more in the mindset we won’t be able to prove, nor disprove, the existence of a higher power, so I’m not 100% sure on what I believe.

When it comes to the devil/demons, I do believe in that sort of thing less than a God.

BUT

The idea of the devil/demons existing absolutely petrifies me. I’m not sure if it’s because of my religious upbringing, but I almost repress any conscious thought about it, because I don’t know what I believe and I’d very much prefer them to not be real. Any stories/cases based around exorcisms, as an example, really get to me more than anything else.

Just.

Nope.

Devil/demon stories just get to me. So much more than anything to do with ghosts/aliens/anything else.

(Side note: I watched a Buzzfeed Unsolved video about a famous exorcism and lol I’m still a little terrified by it.)

Do you believe in astrology?

Astrology is a weird one, because I never started taking notice until a few months ago. I thought it was just mumbo jumbo, vague shit they put in magazines to pad them out.

Earlier in the year, around May time, I was having a really off couple of weeks. I couldn’t explain it, but my memory was shot, I wasn’t sleeping, I was disorganised, it was like someone else had taken over my head because I’m usually not like that at all. I heard that Mercury was in retrograde and I was all “lol now I have an excuse for being shit the last couple of weeks” and thought nothing more of it.

Later in the year (August/September time?) I heard that Mercury was in retrograde again. So then I was like “ha, I knew it was a load of shit – I’ve been fine this time, so last time must have been a coincidence.” But then I looked into it, and apparently the first instance where I struggled, Mercury was in retrograde in Taurus (my sun sign and my Mercury sign) whereas it was in another sign later in the year.

I’m not 100% sure what I believe when it comes to astrology as I’m still learning, but that was a real coincidence if ever I saw one.

If you’re interested in astrology, I would highly recommend The Power Of Mercury by Leslie McGuirk and I’d also recommend reading up on your natal/birth charts. I think there’s a lot more to this astrology thing than I once thought.

Do you believe in the afterlife or reincarnation?

Oh god you guys this one is something I’m VERY interested in at the moment.

Last year, I read a (fictional) book called The Forgetting Time by Sharon Guskin. (Side note: I’d highly recommend it – I couldn’t put it down! Such a great read!) It’s set around a young boy who is acting strange. Without any major spoilers, it turns out he can remember his past life.

There are excerpts within the book – studies of children who can remember past lives to a really creepy amount of detail. I assumed they were fictional, as well as the rest of the novel. Turns out THEY AREN’T.

I absolutely lost my shit when I found out and I’ve been obsessed with researching into reincarnation since.

(I’m sure you’re not surprised by this.)

It turns out there are a surprising amount of cases where people, more often than not children, remember their past lives. The names of relatives, habits of the person they remember being, things only that person would know.

I think this is one that will have most people divided if I’m honest. 46% of people said an outright “no” for both polls. But I am very much encouraging you to have an open mind and do a little bit of research.

I’m not sure what I actually believe when it comes to the afterlife, if there is one, if everyone is reincarnated or just some. Until I looked into it a little more, I would have never even considered it to be a reality But if you look into it, you’ll be suitably freaked out at how possible it could be.

I’d especially recommend looking into James Linegar. Kendall Rae did a really great video about his case!

Also, whether you’re interested in reincarnation or not, definitely read The Forgetting Time. It’s one of those books that just sticks with you! The first book in a while where I haven’t been disappointed by the end!

Do you believe in parallel universes/timelines?

Okay, so I thought this one would be a resounding “no” if I’m honest. But only 31% of people said “no” and I love that!

I’ve always been a big believer in fate. But, unlike some people, I DO believe we, as humans, have free will. I believe that when we are faced with a decision (anything from something small, like choosing what to have for dinner, to massive, life changing decisions), different timelines are created for each decision. I believe we have the free will to make that decision, but are lead down a path depending on what we choose.

I also believe certain aspects of your life are consistent through each timeline, and some things are down to fate. It sounds cheesy, but I do genuinely believe it was fate for Joe and I to meet. If I think about the way we met (a story for another time), there were so many things that could have led up to it, rather than it being down to chance.

I think the easiest way to describe what I believe is the Community episode, “Remedial Chaos Theory”. If you haven’t ever watched Community, one of the characters rolls a dice to choose who goes down to the front door to collect the pizza they’d ordered. It then goes through each timeline, what happened depending on which number was rolled and each different person went to collect the pizza.

I think this is also the plot of the film, The Butterfly Effect? I haven’t seen it so I’m not sure. But, basically, I believe in that.

Do you believe in life after love?

Duh. Yes.

(lol, I’m hilarious)

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed a little insight into all the wonderful things I spend my time thinking about/obsessing over. Please do discuss it in the comments, because I’d love to talk to you all about what you believe! And let me know if you’d like me to discuss anything specific/in more detail in the future! <3

  • I loved this post, I enjoy hearing other people’s views on these kind of topics!

I believe in astrology and often read my horoscope. Horoscope friends is a really good one if you ever want to read your daily or weekly horoscope.

I think when we die, our spirits stay around. Apparently when I was younger, I used to talk to people that weren’t there, it’s weird how children can experience these types of things more than adults. There’s also been quite a few things happen in our family when people have passed, I’d love to see a medium (I think that’s what they’re called) and see if anyone comes through.

As for reincarnation, I’ve been told that I’ve been here before. I have a little obsession with the 1950’s and I cannot stand the air raid siren which makes me think that maybe I do have a past life xx

  • I loved reading this post. I definitely believe in bits and pieces in all the above (I also count myself as semi-agnostic) And hand over heart I’m convinced I saw a ghost once! X

  • I LOVE stuff like this. I wholeheartedly believe in the paranormal, intelligent life, demons and timelines, and honestly, I think I only have doubts or become sceptical about them when I’m trying to comfort myself, haha.

I haven’t had any experience with the paranormal or demons myself, but my Nan has been to psychic shows a few times, and used to watch Most Haunted with me when I was a kid (questionable, but we’ll roll with it). She’s also told me tales of experiences her relatives or friends have had as well. These range from someone having their house blessed, to another’s child abruptly moving out the way seemingly for no reason – it turned out she was letting the man, who used to live there, go past… Eerie, but SO neat. I could go on, but this will be the longest comment ever! In simple terms, I totally believe!! xxx

  • Ahh this was so interesting to read. I was watching the results of the polls when you did them, and it is so good to see all these thoughts. I’m totally with you on the aliens. I think it’s a little ridiculous to think that in the expanse of the sky and all those different planets, galaxies, universes (or whatever the scientific terms are) that we are alone. There have got to be other species living on other planets. Has to.

As for the rest – I’m a bit of a sceptic. I’m not totally against it ghosts being real and demons and all that stuff, but I feel like I need solid facts or evidence to really believe, y’know? Seems a little hypocritical seeing as we don’t have solid evidence of aliens (as far as I know?!) but yeah… That’s how my brain works haha. I’ve seen documentaries with those children who know things they shouldn’t from past lives though, and it is super creepy!

  • Girl this makes me so happy. I definitely believe in spirits and aliens, and the idea of a parallel universe is so exciting to me!

I love reading about this sort of stuff but I don’t really believe most of it, I just find it very interesting to see other peoples opinions and hear about their experiences

  • Love this post! I absolutely love chatting about ghosts/aliens/afterlife/reincarnation etc so I really enjoyed reading this. I 100% believe in aliens, in whatever form they might take. I totally agree with you that it’s a little ignorant to think Earth is the only planet capable of sustaining life, and that we are the only intelligent life form in the universe. When it comes to the afterlife/reincarnation, I’m on the fence. I feel like I should believe in the afterlife, which for me is Heaven, because I’m a Christian and have been all my life. But I also feel quite strongly that there has to be more to all this than just 80 years on this planet, and then spending the rest of infinity on a cloud or something. My mum is a firm believer in reincarnation, and she really made me think more about reincarnations when she said that the reason I keep reaching the gearbox and missing (by miles, I reach for it in a place it’s never been, and I’ve only ever driven this car) is because I drove a car with the gearbox in that position in a past life. I’m not 100% convinced, but I really like to think we are reincarnated when we die. Also, 100% believe in ghosts, having had more than I can count experiences. I’m very sensitive to spirits, I think. Possibly because I’m descended from the original Romany gypsies? The clearest memory I have is from when I was a baby. There was a woman, dressed in a white nightgown or dress, who would sit by my crib every night watching over me. Sometimes when my mum would come in to see to me because I was fussing she would pick me up and I would point and say “woman” “woman” but she couldn’t see anything. My granddad once saw this woman though, he was coming out of the bathroom and she was coming down the hall from my nursery. He says it scared him half to death and he still remembers it well now 26 years later! Anyway, enough rambling from me. I just love talking about this stuff! x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

You’ll want to check out Borges’ Garden of Forking Paths. It’s one of the things that stuck from my philosophy course in uniβ€”

  • Astrology is an interesting one. I haven’t really looked into it but I do believe in reincarnation. I believe that souls can live longer than a body and we are put into different “shells” to be taught different things and to grow. Great post!

  • It’s really fascinating to me the sorts of things that people believe. I’m a through-and-through atheist and don’t believe in gods, devils, ghosts, spirits, reincarnation or anything like that. I “believe” in the natural forces of the universe like gravity, electromagnetism and evolution, although I hesitate to even use the word “believe” in this context because those forces exist and have real and calculable effects on the universe whether you believe in them or not. I think the things that people attribute to gods, spirits or astrology are simply coincidence; with enough people in the world having so many experiences at any given time it’s only natural that multiple, similar coincidences will be taken together to form a conclusion that is easily explained by something much more mundane, like chance.

The two questions that I would give more than a hard “no” to are the ones about intelligent life and parallel universes. Like you, I assume that intelligent life exists somewhere out there. It’s just unfathomable that we could be the only intelligent life in a possibly infinite universe, the odds are just too great. I think, though, that it’s highly possible that we wouldn’t even recognize other life if we came across it because it would be so different from us. Parallel universes are where I can’t really say one way or another what I believe. I love the idea as a storytelling mechanic (that episode of Community sounds really cool!) but I just don’t have the scientific knowledge and background necessary to even begin to have an informed opinion about their existence.

    Thanks for the interesting post!

Uh yeah, I pretty much believe in all of this- I’ve had some…let’s just say strange experiences myself which makes me believe things a lot more and also I think I’m fairly open to accepting a lot of possibilities. Also, I don’t understand how people can think we’re the only intelligent life out there, I mean, there is literally the WHOLE universe aside from us!

  • I really really REALLY enjoyed this post and I have to say I feel a bit ‘weird’ reading about the past lives bit. You know that feeling like you’re a bit emotional/scared/overjoyed all at the same time?

Like you, I was raised Catholic and then decided it wasn’t for me. But I have always been very spiritual and believed in the supernatural (I had a few weird experiences when I was a child that convinced me) so I have never been an atheist. Programmes like Stranger Things and even Rick and Morty to an extent have shaped how I think about the universe and timelines and I find it soooo interesting. I used to be a big believer in karma and fate but I’m not sure if I believe in karma now because awful things happen to good people.

I could literally ramble about this kind of thing for hours! xxx

The only one that Im unsure of is Astrology. I don’t really see how it could exist BUT when you read about the personality traits of different star signs they are so true for myself and the people that I know. My Mam is a Gemini and is an actual twin too which used to freak me out as a kid :P xx
